Could You Have Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a fairly common medical problem defined as the inability to attain an erection or maintain one long enough for satisfying sexual activity. While it is normal for a man to have trouble achieving an erection every now and again, if the problem is persistent, he could be experiencing ED.

Symptoms of Erectile Dysfunction

If you have trouble achieving an erection occasionally, the problem is not likely to be serious. If impotence has come on gradually and persistently, there is likely to be a physical cause. This type of ED can be treated with medications or medical devices. If you are still having early morning erections and are able to achieve an erection in some situations, but not others, the problem may be psychological in nature. Psychological causes of ED are treated differently than physical causes.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

A visit to your doctor can help to clarify the cause of your ED. Impotence is linked to a number of serious and minor health problems, but almost all cases are treatable.

Some common causes of ED include:
• Cardiovascular disease
• Diabetes
• Parkinson’s disease
• Multiple sclerosis
• Low testosterone
• Medications
• Treatment for prostate cancer or enlarged prostate
• Spinal cord injuries

Risk Factors for Erectile Dysfunction Certain risk factors make it more likely for you to develop ED. Having heart disease or diabetes can affect blood flow to the penis. Tobacco use also restricts blood flow that can lead to imotence. Being overweight or obese increases the risk, as does drug or heavy alcohol use. Medical treatments affecting nerves around the prostate have a very high risk of creating ED.

Stress, anxiety, or depression can lead to ED, and some of the medications used to treat psychological problems can be the cause. Certain antihistamines, pain medications, or high blood pressure medications can also contribute.

Prolonged bicycling can create a temporary type of ED as nerves are compressed and blood flow to the penis is inhibited.
